The saddest thing about working at a publishing house is that you see so many beautiful books die before they are born. It is the sad, hard truth that numbers speak louder than words. If the sales department shakes its solemn, bespectacled head, a lovely little novel puts its tender neck on the editorial board and Chop chop! it is sent bleeding back to its author, accompanied by a form letter expressing best wishes for the future.
